Floods are a common natural disaster that can have a significant impact on communities and individuals. They occur when water from heavy rainfall, melting snow, or overflowing rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water covers normally dry land. Floods can cause widespread damage, including destruction of homes, businesses, and infrastructure, as well as loss of life and displacement of communities. Floods can also trigger secondary hazards such as landslides, fires, and waterborne diseases, making it difficult for rescue and recovery efforts to proceed. In addition, floods can cause widespread power outages, water and gas line breaks, and transportation disruptions, making it difficult for people to access essential services and supplies. To prepare for floods, it is important to understand the risks and be prepared to take action. This includes creating an emergency plan, stocking emergency supplies, and understanding evacuation routes. Governments and organizations are also working to improve flood protection measures, such as building dikes and levees, to reduce the impact of floods on communities. Despite these efforts, floods will continue to pose a threat to communities around the world. It is important for individuals and communities to be prepared, stay informed, and take action to protect themselves and their loved ones in the event of a flood.

In 2020, when the highest rate of precipitation was recorded in 60 years, a series of floods struck Central Vietnam from October to November. Actually, there’s a reason why I consider this a disaster.

I saw the news on TV reporting the damage that incident had caused to my people, which was heart-broken. For the entire month, that disaster took over the news coverage. The heavy rain created an extended landslide, destroying thousands of houses. This led to the obstruction of traffic in general, making it hard for rescue teams to reach the unfortunate.

However, that was not the saddest part of this catastrophe. Although the government tried to evacuate the residents there, many people had passed away due to the floods and so many more are now still missing.

After about one to two months, the people there could stabilize their living conditions a little bit, but I knew it was going to be challenging since most of them were farmers. It was claimed by the state television network that a lot of livestock were swept away during the floods, so this would negatively affect their livelihoods. As I wanted to help the people in the central area, I donated some of my money so that their life would be easier.

Anyways, I know my dream is a bit unrealistic, but I hope in the future, there won’t be a disaster in the central area of my country anymore. Seeing them suffering every year like that breaks my heart at some points.
