2. Everybody else arrived before Paul.
(the last) Paul was the last person to arrive.
3. Fiona passed the exam. All the other students failed.
(the only) Fiona was the only student to pass the exam.
When we want to say that someone was the "first", "last", or "only" one to do something, we follow this pattern:
| Structure | Example |
|---|---|
| The first / second / etc. | He was the first to know. |
| The last | You are the last to leave. |
| The only | She is the only one to pass. |

Instead of using a relative clause like "Paul was the last person who arrived", we can use a to-infinitive to make the sentence more concise and natural in English.
Example 2: Paul arrived after everyone else, so he was "the last person to arrive."
Example 3: Since everyone else failed, Fiona was "the only student to pass."
