Humans have traditionally eaten both meat and vegetables, but meat consumption has increased dramatically. According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global meat demand has risen by over 500 percent in the past 50 years. This method could reduce the energy and land required for raising cattle by about 40 percent. Meanwhile, scientists in the United States and China are working on creating natural "meaty" flavors from mushrooms to enhance plant-based foods. They believe that natural flavors are healthier and more acceptable to consumers. Although lab-grown meat is still in development, large-scale production remains a decade away due to high costs. The Dutch team is spending over $200,000 to produce enough meat for one burger. While many people are not yet ready to accept lab-grown meat, it may become a necessity in the future.
