Over the last hundred years or so, we have learned much about humanity's origins and evolution. (..1..) man-made objects, such as tools of stone and bone, and skeletal remains have (..2..) to this knowledge. Skeletal remains of human ancestors are not (..3..): we would be in much better position to trace our evolution if we were horses instead of humans beings! Tools and other such remains are more common. (..4..) they do not tell us how these early humans looked, they do tell us about their way of life. The first important discovery was (..5..) of a skeleton in Germany in 1856. This skeleton was (..6..) classified as Neanderthal man. Since then, there have been many other (..7..) of Neanderthal remains in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In 1891, remains of an obviously more primitive type were discovered in Java, known as "ape man". Now it is regarded as one example of a widely (..8..) human ancestor known as "upright man". In 1925 a (..9..) more primitive type called "southern ape" was discovered in Africa, (..10..) a number of similar remains have been discovered since then.
