Almost all food, excluding water and salt, contains energy measured in calories. Approximately half of these calories are utilized for physical activity, while the other half is used for bodily processes like growth, breathing, and digestion. People gain weight when they consume more energy than they expend through daily activities, with excess energy being stored as body fat, which can lead to health issues like heart strain and joint pain. Despite a decrease in energy intake over the past 40 years, weight gain persists due to reduced physical activity levels as people increasingly rely on convenience, such as driving, using elevators, and escalators, rather than engaging in more physical movement.
