You probably know about Marco Polo, the famous explorer of the $12^{\text {th }}$ century. But do you know about Ibn Battuta? Ibn Battuta was a great explorer who lived almost 200 years before Christopher Columbus.

Battuta set off for Mecca in 1325. He left his home of Tangier when he was 20 years old and traveled for about 30 years. He visited what today would be 44 countries in Asia and Africa. His travels weren't always easy. One time bandits attacked him, and once he almost drowned in a sinking ship. Even though he had problems on his travels, he saw lots of amazing things. For example, in India, he went to a palace and met a king who had 200 soldiers, 60 horses, and 50 elephants around him. The elephants were all wearing real gold.

Battuta's last journey was to the West African kingdom of Mali. Crossing the Sahara Desert took him more than two months. Mali was a rich country, and before Battuta left for Mali, he heard about a generous king who gave his guests wonderful gifts-like robes and money. However, when Battuta arrived in Mali, he found out that the old king had died. The new king also gave him a gift-a pile of food! When Battuta saw this gift, he burst out laughing.

When Battuta finally went home to Morocco, he wrote a book about all of his adventures. Later, people translated his stories into many different languages. Because of this, we know much about his life during the 14th century. Battuta died in 1369 . He was 64 years old.
