When firefighters turn up to put out a fire, traditionally people expect them to be men. However, underneath the protective clothing, helmet and visor, there are more and more women. One such woman is Krystyna Krakowski. She became a firefighter in Florida in 2000, when there were very few women to work beside or guide her in the service. She is now not only successful but also recruiting more females into the profession. Firefighters need to wear heavy equipment, use various tools and perform rescue operation. Therefore, they have to be quick thinkers, strong and courageous. They work 24-hour shifts and then get 48 hours off before they repeat the same routine. They also provide fire safety education and other measures that can help communities prevent accidents or avoid injuries.

Read the following passage. Write T if the statement is TRUE, F if the statement is FALSE and NI if there is NO INFORMATION on it.

A gender stereotype is a fixed idea about characteristics that women and men should have. From an early age, parents tend to treat boys and girls differently and encourage children to engage in gender-appropriate play (e.g., boys play with cars; girls play with dolls). Phrases like ‘man up’ or ‘you run like a girl’ are talked to children every day. The media also plays a role in its portrayal of men and women in sex-typed occupations (e.g., men as doctors and women as nurses). As a result, gender stereotypes can influence the decisions of children when they choose their future careers. Young girls tend to go after careers in office work, nursing, teaching, homecare and childcare. Boys are likely to work in the fields of engineering, science, computing or finance. In fact, according to Lifting Limits, in the UK, only 17% of ICT professionals and 12% of construction industry workers are female. In addition, the number of women working in engineering professionals is less than 10%, while registered male nurses make up 11%. Besides, men have experienced negative bias when working in positions that others associate with women. For example, boys are likely to be looked down on when they want to go into a female-dominated career like hairdressing, because they are not considered masculine enough. Although stereotypes can be hard to change, we can do something to help minimize gender bias. We can teach children that they should make a career choice that is suited to their talents, interests and abilities, not one that is restricted by job-gender stereotypes.

26. Evidence of gender stereotypes can be found in many parts of our daily life.

27. Gender stereotypes can influence children’s decisions on choosing their future careers.

28. The number of female ICT professionals accounts for 12%.

29. If boys work in a female-dominated field, they will have lots of pressure.

Read the following passages. For each of the questions from 31 to 35, write D for Ann Elizabeth Dunwoody, L for Wendy B. Lawrence, and D&L for both.

Nowadays, women around the world are taking up jobs generally considered to be men’s jobs. Here are two women that have broken the barriers of gender bias in the world of work.

Ann Elizabeth Dunwoody is the first woman to earn the rank of four-star general not only in the Army but the entire US armed forces. At the age of five, Dunwoody wanted nothing more than to become a doctor or nurse. During her junior year of college, Dunwoody attended a four-week Army introductory programme. It was then she found her passion for soldiering. Dunwoody once said at her retirement ceremony: “Over the last 38 years, I have had the opportunity to witness women soldiers jump out of airplanes, hike 10 miles, lead men and women, even under the toughest circumstances. Today, what was once a band of brothers has truly become a band of brothers and sisters.”

Wendy B. Lawrence was the first female graduate of the US Naval Academy, the first female naval officer and the first female helicopter pilot to fly into space. “I was 10 years old when Apollo 11 landed on the moon and that was my 'aha' moment as I like to say," said Lawrence. "I looked at Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon and thought that's what I want to do when I grow up: 'I'm gonna be an astronaut and I am gonna fly into space.” After retiring from NASA in 2006, Lawrence has worked at Space Camp in Alabama and the Kennedy Center Visitor Centre, igniting the minds of the young with a passion for science and technology. She once told the reporter: “So I'd say give women an opportunity to try. You might be surprised at what they bring to the table, what they're capable of."

Who …

26. decided her future career after watching the first men walk on the moon? _______
