Topic 1: Home and accommodation
- Do you live in a house or a flat?
I live in a house, which I bought eleven years ago. It has three bedrooms. There’s one bedroom for myself and my wife, one for my son, and one guest room for visitors.
- Can you describe the place where you live?
Briefly, my humble house locates in a small and quiet street, so coming home to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just beside my house stands a big old tree.
- How long have you lived there?
Although during my childhood my family had to move a lot, I’ve lived in the most recent house for almost ten years. Comparing to the old houses, I think this house has been the best so far.
- Please describe the room you live in.
I have my own room with walls painted violet, which is kind of a peaceful colour. The air outside is fresh. I usually open the window to enjoy the wind and sunshine, which will help cool my room without an air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time staying at home, my room means the whole world to me. It’s like a friend who is always there to share ups and downs with me. So yeah, I would always miss my house, my room whenever I’m away.
- What part of your home do you like the most?
It’s the dining room where my family spends our time together. Not only lunch or dinner but all our family reunions take place in the dining room where we can enjoy a harmonious atmosphere. We always try to keep the family dinner as something we cannot go a day without, since for us it’s the family bonding that lies behind.
- Who do you live with?
I live with my family. There are 5 of us and we all have our own room, which is way more comfortable as the older we grow, the more privacy we need for ourselves. I think our house is big enough for us yet still a warm and cosy place that I call home.
- What room does your family spend most of the time in?
It’s definitely the kitchen. Not only lunch or dinner time but all our family reunions take place in the kitchen where all the family members get together to eat tasty meals, and chat to each other – it’s a really harmonious atmosphere.
- What do you usually do in your flat?
Well, when I have some time to myself, I like hanging out in my room. It’s probably where I feel most at home. After all, I got to decorate it myself. So everything is to my taste. I usually just sit and read, or scroll through social media on my phone. It’s a nice way to kill time.
- What kinds of accommodation do you live in?
For the past 21 years, I have been living in a house with my family, and I think if I can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best to have an independent place where I can plan and design a house layout that suits myself since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds troublesome to me.
- Do you plan to live there for a long time?
The answer would be yes if the respondent is my parents since moving in and out is too time-consuming and exhausting. Cleaning and arranging everything all over again would be like torture to them. For me, on the other hand, as I’m thinking of moving out to start my adult life, hopefully soon I’ll be able to afford to live in a flat or an apartment.
- Do you prefer living in a house or a flat?
I believe most people would prefer to have their own house rather than to rent a place and so do I. Hence, if I have my way, a house with a small garden would be my choice since I don’t enjoy the constant disturbance from next-door apartments and elevator rides every time coming home.
- Are the transport facilities to your home very good?
I mostly travel around with my motorbike so I don’t really care much about the bus services around. I’m quite certain that there’s no subway station in the neighborhood. But the roads are well-paved and big.I mostly travel around with my motorbike so I don’t really care much about the bus services around. I’m quite certain that there’s no subway station in the neighborhood. But the roads are well-paved and big.
- What kind of house or flat do you want to live in in the future?
I’d really love to live in a big house in the middle of nowhere. It might sound a little lonely, but I think having a family there would be awesome. You would have tons of privacy because you don’t have any nosy neighbours. And if it was somewhere nice, you could probably have a great view of the stars.
- What's your favorite room in your apartment/house?
It will definitely have to be the bedroom. The reason is that it is the room which best shows my personality. I painted the walls blue as it is my favourite colour, and I also have a lot of ornaments to decorate the room.
- What's the difference between where you are living now and where you have lived in the past?
There’re quite a few differences. My parents’ house is huge with separate rooms, each of which has its own bathroom so it’s really convenient and private. However, my apartment right now is much smaller and I have to share a bathroom with my roomate.
- Do you think it is important to live in a comfortable environment?
Environmental comfort is essential in our daily lives, affecting our health, productivity, and overall well-being. Whether at home or in the workplace, ensuring that our environment is comfortable and conducive to our needs is vital.
- Why do you think some people invest a huge amount of money in buying houses?
People certainly have different reasons to buy property. I believe the most important one is privacy. You will gain much more independence and freedom to refurbish the place as you please since you are the owner. Besides, it would create a pride of ownership. No matter how small or big your house is, it is yours to renovate or brag about.
Topic 2: Study
- Do you work, or are you a student?
Currently, I am a year-12 student studying at…High School. To be honest, I haven’t decided my major yet, but I am really into business studies
- Describe your education.
I started school when I was 7. I finished my primary education 5 years later and I went to secondary school at 12. Then at 16, I made it to a high school for gifted pupils in my hometown. In my country, highschool education lasts 3 years.
- What is your area of specialization?
Well, I haven't made my mind yet. My first choice is Plant Biotechnology.
- Why did you choose to study that major?
Since I was in high school, I have been into biology, and I think a shift to a field where Biology and advanced technology are associated would be interesting and promising for my future career.
- Do you like your major? (Why?/Why not?)
I don’t think I will be bored if I can make a living off of it. Plus, the income level of specialists in this field is also higher than average, so I can have a comfortable life by working as a scientist.
- What kind of school did you go to as a child?
I went to public schools, you know, from primary to high school. My parents could only afford the tuition fees of public schools; going to a private school was out of the question for us. And I never regret going to these public schools.
- What was your favourite subject as a child?
had a liking for Maths and English. I usually got very good grades in these two subjects. At primary and secondary schools, I was the apple of both Maths and English teachers’ eyes because most of the time, I was the first to come up with the correct answers.
- Do you think your country has an effective education system?
Frankly speaking, I don’t think so. Our education system still cares too much about achievements and focuses on an exam-driven curriculum, which I find unduly stressful for both teachers and students.
- Are you looking forward to working?
To be honest, I really look forward to joining the labor force because I want to relieve my mother’s financial burden. I expect to land a job with a handsome salary which can help me to pay the bills.
