BIGGEST SNAKE DISCOVERED

Monster Snake Found!

A team of scientists have discovered the bones of a snake that lived in the rain forests of Colombia 60 million years ago. They have named it "Titanoboa." Titanoboa, also known as "the monster snake," is the largest, longest, and heaviest snake ever discovered.

Scientists believe Titanoboa was a good swimmer, but was even faster on land than in water. Scientists at the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History said they also found fossils of giant turtles and crocodiles in the same area. They think the snake ate those animals. Titanoboa weighed over 1,100 kilograms and was 13 to 15 meters long. The second largest snake after Titanoboa was Gigantophis, which was around 11 meters long. Gigantophis lived in North Africa about 40 million years ago.

Titanoboa belongs to the same family as the anaconda, but was much larger. The anacondas found on Earth today are around 6-6.5 meters long. The heaviest snake-the green anaconda-weighs about 200 kilograms. This means the Titanoboa was almost twice as long as the largest snake alive today, and around five times as heavy!

Why is Titanoboa important? The reptile can tell scientists a lot about the history of the Earth's climate. Some

researchers believe these snakes could not have grown so big without year-round temperatures of at least 32 celcus. Today, larger cold-blooded animals like snakes are found in the tropics - where it is hottest-and smaller ones are found farther from the equator. Because of this, researchers believe that some places on Earth were much warmer than they are today. However, if global warming is making the Earth's temperature rise, will there be more giant snakes a million years from now?
