Tet Holiday, or the Lunar New Year, is the most significant festival in Vietnamese culture. It's a time for family reunions, new beginnings, and spiritual renewal. Here's a glimpse into what many Vietnamese people often do during this festive period:
Before Tet: People typically start preparing weeks in advance. Homes are thoroughly cleaned and decorated with vibrant flowers, lanterns, and colorful ornaments. Families also buy new clothes, furniture, and other essentials for the upcoming year. Many people visit markets to purchase traditional foods, such as banh Chung and banh Tet, which are staples during Tet. It's also a time for settling debts, resolving conflicts, and seeking blessings from ancestors.
During Tet: People often gather with their families to share meals, exchange gifts, and engage in traditional activities. The first day of Tet is reserved for family reunions, and the following days are for visiting friends and relatives. People also participate in traditional games, such as Bau Cua Tom Ca and Dam Cuoi, and take part in lion dances and dragon dances. Additionally, many visit temples and pagodas to pray for good fortune and prosperity.
After Tet: Life gradually returns to normal. People go back to work, and students return to school. The post-Tet period is also a time for reflection and gratitude, as people express appreciation for the blessings and good fortune they received during the festive season. Many also start planning for the upcoming year, setting new goals and making promises to themselves to become better versions of themselves.
Tet is a beautiful blend of tradition, family, and hope for the future.
