Titanic was the world's longest passenger ship. It was around 270 meters long - the length of three football fields! It was a luxury liner that carried some of the world's richest people. On April 10, 1912, the ship left Southampton, England, on its maiden, week-long voyage to New York City. There were about 2,200 people onboard when the ship set sail. However, the ship carried only 20 lifeboats - enough for only half of the passengers. Four days into its journey, on the night of April 14, the ship struck an iceberg. The moon was not out, and the water was still, which made the iceberg difficult to see. About three hours after the collision, the ship broke in two and sank. While around 700 passengers and crew members were rescued in lifeboats, the remaining passengers either drowned or died because of the cold water. The temperature of the water was around -2celcus, and very few could survive for longer than 15 minutes in those conditions.
