Halfway to the Top of the World

Tues. September 6: Today, we began our eight-day walk to Everest Base Camp. I'm here with my friend Susan. She hasn't said much, so I'm a little worried, but she's always a bit quiet. Thankfully, we have two Sherpas with us-Karmal and Nawang. They're local people who live in the Khumbu Valley. They carried our heavy bags, and will be leading the way. They're very hard-working and friendly-I feel like I already know them!

Thurs. September 8: Karmal woke us up at 4 o'clock this morning. He's really easygoing and friendly. He told me his name means "the smallest star in the sky"! He made us walk ten long hours-almost all uphill. It was a very long day. I had a bit of a headache the whole time. I now realize that this trek definitely won't be easy! However, we did get our first glimpse of the high mountains. The view was breathtaking! And Susan has pleasantly surprised me- she really has a lot of stamina! Of the two of us, I think she's the stronger one.

Sun. September 11: The climb from Pheriche to Lobuche was really hard. The rocky slopes were very steep, and at times it felt a little dangerous.

Mon. September 12: Today's walk from Lobuche to Gorak Shep was another difficult one. It was also very cold-Susan's watch said it was -2.3°C. We were both feeling tired and sick. We arrived at Base Camp after a full 10.5 hours, but the beautiful view made it all worthwhile. Reaching Base Camp is one of the greatest achievements of my life-after all, not many people can say that they've climbed halfway to the top of the world!
